Lyric Update

Hi All.

I thought I would post an update on my latest experiences with the Lyric. I've had a busy summer with lots of outdoor events and sports and found some new creative ways to deal with different environments.

First off, I'm happy to say that I now go DAYS without thinking about my hearing aids. It really is amazing to think that I used to have to take them in and out each morning, deal with batteries each week and then still make adjustments a few times a day. Now I go days without even thinking about them, let alone make any sort of adjustment.

Anyway, back to the new ideas. This summer I had a few water sports activities lined up. 1st was a trip with my local Boy Scouts to a lake, then another was 5 days at Lake Powell on a house boat, (yeah, I know... tough life!). Anyway, I've been looking for more ways to deal with being around the water and this time I really put Doc's Pro Plugs to the test. My audiologist also gave me an Ear Band-It. I may have looked kind of silly, but I was able to swim, wake board, ski, etc. all while keeping my Lyrics in and working. It was awesome! I'm going to try to post up some photos and more details of the process, but it's been great to find a way to spend time with my kids in the pool without having to sit on the sidelines.

no comments - weird - and such a great useful blog. Should be required reading. Thanks!

I tried two behind the ear aids and after a month I couldn't take it. No. correction, after two months as Kaiser P. refused to fail.

Tried Lyrics assuming the test would be a failure too. "I've got to warn you, I know I won't like them" I said.

To my amazement they worked straight off. After a day or two I forgot that there was one in my right ear.

The left ear was painful. After a week, it was removed and they gave me a week off for my ear to recover.

The replacement left one was the next size down. Perfect!

Unless I think about it, I'm not aware that there's anything in my ears. Amazing.

The real surprise is how well I can place sounds. I accurately know where the sound is coming from - even from behind.

At home, I've adjusted to the new loudness. Except the compression is bad. Louis's trumpet pushes the rest of the band down. Dropping a teaspoon in the kitchen will briefly lower the sound of the refrigerator.

Sharp transients (like dropping cutlery) are distorted and makes my brain twitch.

Outside and in the car it is ALL TOO LOUD. Ouch!
Difficult to readjust the volume on the fly.

I'll see what the audiologist can do - lowering compression and maybe a bass cut.

Thanks again - S

Which earplugs from the linked site did you use? Sounds like a great solution.

Hey Peter.

I got my proplugs from my audiologist, but I'm pretty sure they are the non-vented. I need to order some of the cool color versions they have out now. Doesn't seem like the vent is very big, so either style would probably work fine.

Did you see that they are doing swimming trials with the new model of Lyric? Pretty cool! May not need these any longer.

Dane, when you say "swimming," do you mean actually sticking your head underwater?

One of my great pleasures in life is jumping into the ocean and swimming underwater. I only get to do it about a week a year, but I love it.

My audiologist says, no big deal, pull the Lyrics when you're about to go in and we'll put new ones in when you get back, but I'd rather not do that, so I think I'm gonna try the plugs.

Yes, really swimming :)

With my pro plugs I have gone swimming, body surfing, wake boarding and water skiing.

However, when I went to the Islands for a couple weeks this spring to snorkel, I just took them out. I knew they wouldn't hold up to 2 weeks under water and I didn't even want to mess with it. I pulled my Lyrics and just went to my old hearing aids for a backup.

Now, the new Lyric models have a new covering over the mic which is supposed to seal the water out much better, so I am excited to give them a try. They are doing trials with people that swim every day now.

I really enjoy your blog, I just discovered this and it's great reading. I lost hearing in one ear late last year in an explosion (I luckily had a headset ear plug in the other ear or I would have lost both) and after a few trials with different hearing aids my audiologist we settled on Lyric. Although the Lyric doesn't completely fix all my hearing loss (I have 60-70 db loss across all tones) it does give me back the higher tones mostly and allows me the sensation of 360 degrees sound again so I can figure out where things are.

I used to swim a lot, but haven't tried it with the lyric, my audiologist basically said "go for it" with respect to swimming. He tried to get me into the clinical trials but I didn't qualify (needed to be using them for over a year and in both ears was minimum)

I'm going to take your advice on ear plugs, but was wondering if you used the vented or unvented ones while swimming? I want to go with the vented but I'm worried some water will still get in, is this a problem? My swimming will be a mix of open water (salt water) and pool.

Thanks again for your blog and keep it up! It's awesome reading.

Hey Dr.

Glad to hear that the Lyrics are working well for you. My latest advice, (which I need to blog about) is to bag the ear plugs all together. We got our pool setup 2 weeks ago and I've been swimming several times without any ear protection and haven't had any issues. It's awesome!

I used un-vented plugs when I did, but this solution is even better.

Regards,

Dane
